597 .22mag converted too????

I recently aquired my first 597. It is a .22mag, semi-auto, factory blued barrel, with composite stock. I was wondering a number of things, so here is my list of questions:

- Were can I get a bull barrel for this? How about a nice laminated stock?

- How hard is it to swap out the stocks? I don't know much (if anything) about inleting, or bedding?

- The mags say .22WMR/17HMR. What would I need to do to convert it to 17HMR? Is it as simple as a different barrel?

Thanks for the help,
-Fat.

Jarvis is making a 17 HRM barrel for it. website is ----> HERE

VQ is suppose to be making one but i dont think it is out yet.
Both of these companies make 22 mag barrels but only Jarvis makes them for the 17HRM right now

A number of company makes drop in finished laminated stocks for your rile look on the main page of RFC and you will see links to the sponsers wander through there and find one you like.

Yes to switch from a 22 mag to a 17HRM all you have to do is switch barrels and get 17HRM ammo.

Hope this helps

The trigger groups should all be the same

Especialy between 22 mag and 22 HMR they are the same round just different calibers

the 17 is the 22 mag necked down to a 17 calbier, the 17 is faster and extends the range of the 22 mag. it is also a lot more accurate. Go to the 17 forum of this webisite and you will read a lot of info on it. :t :t

Well, they are. However, I believe that the magazine well of the HMR and WMR models are bigger than the LR model. Brownells only sells the entire group as one unit (not individual parts, as far as I can tell), thus the need for a new trigger group.

BTW,

I've yet to see a 22 HMR :p

yes they 22 LR and the 22mag and the 17HMR :)p) have a different mag well, BUT since the original question dealt with a 22 MAG we didn't have to worry about that.

I suppose you could convert a 597 .22lr to .22mag.,
But since he (Original poster) plainly stated he already had a .22mag, the only conversion parts neccessary for a .17HRM would be the barrel. (and .17HRM ammo, of course!)

However, if you have the standard contour barrel as I do, from what I gather, you would have to open up the barrel channel to accept a heavy barrel (nominal .920 vs the approx .750" "standard" barrel).

I easily accomplished this on a Ruger standard barrel stock by using a 1/2 sanding drum, followed by a 3/4" sanding drum and using a 12" extension I got from "BIG LOTS" for about $3.00. I also used a saw to cut the barrel band area from the stock, giving the stock a nice under-cut similar to the Remington stock. That, and a lot of Epoxy to bed the action, ect., ect., ect.

Conversion of a .22LR m597 to a .22MAG, would besides a new MAGNUM trigger group , and Magnum Magazines, {would also require a MAGNUM BOLT assembly}.

(Scratch a new bolt- I just tried a "FIRED .17HRM CASE", AND IT FIT THE BOLT FACE. IF I EVER DISASSEMBLE THE BOLT FROM THE MAG, I'LL CHECK FOR INTERCHAGEABILITY).
Also, it would require the magnum action springs and MAGNUM bolt buffer. According to Remington and Brownells, there is also a difference between the inner and outer springs as they have different part #'s.

Trigger group: $64.21

Action spring (inner) $4.33

Action spring (outer) $3.03

Magnum bolt buffer $3.03

Hold Open $3.89

Magazines $14.61

Plus cost of barrel ~$200.00

Plus shipping on items ~$20.00

Total: $310.00

I paid $289.00 for my m597-Magnum.
"zero" for my 597-lr, as I "won" it.
(It's a keeper !!! -see below)

In my estimation, it would not be cost efficient to convert a .22lr too .22mag as the parts list cost would exceed the cost of buying a .22mag in the first place and then adding a .22lr to the collection; you can buy a second .22lr for about $140.00 taxes included.

BTW; after installation of a laminated stock (Boyds for $12.00 !!, plus shipping and butt pad), my m597-lr out-shoots any of the several Ruger 10/22's I've had/modified. Thats right, -with the factory barrel, standard contour !!! About 30min with a Arkansas stone gave me a ~32oz. trigger too- on both the .22lr and .22mag 597's I have.

Best group with .22lr has been with Wolf "Match" followed closely by some "OLD" Federal GM match (the stuff with the dimpled case). Both groups were 1 hole and ran right around .375" at 50 yds. Groups with CCI mini-mags run 1/2" to 5/8th" at 50yds- monotonously!

The .22mag 597 routinely turns in 1" 5-shot groups at 100yds with the Winchester 40gr hp's. It's not too fond of any of the lighter bullet loads and runs to 1.5" to 2" with them, again favoring the Winchester 34gr Supreme. The "fluke" load is the CCI 50gr GoldDot. It frequently will give 3 shots one hole at 50yds. and hits to zero at 50yds with the "40gr-100yd" zero. For some reason, (probably wind) the groups open up a bit more at 100yds.

It too favorably responded to the Boyds laminated stock treatment, but this one's stock had to be glass bedded to hold zero as the front of the stocks foward reciever area and barrel channel had a little "play".

You just gotta love these rifles !!!

Thank You Remington !

Now, release a few .17HRM barrels !!!!

Sorry; at the price of a Jarvis barrel, I bought a Marlin 917 b/a. Probably a good decision given the price of 17HRM ammo !

Ok, Ok, you got me there  .

CarpCop,

Supposedly, Jarvis offers a factor-tapered barrel in 17HMR. Also, several folks have made the switch while still keeping the LR bolt and springs. They've said they've had no problems. I guess time will tell. I'd just assume get a factory 22WMR. One can never have too many 597's :D .
