I Was Impressed with the H&R 5200 Today

I mounted a Mueller APV scope on the 5200 today and took it out just to get more rounds down the tube to better break in the barrel.
I worked on one small spot on the bedding I was not happy with and soft lapped the barrel with some JB Bore Shine last night.
The barrel looks like a million bucks just looking down it. I not longer have my bore scope.

Anyway, I went out and shot it with the cheapest Remingtom ammo I had, I think it was $19. a brick.
The darn thing was shooting 1/2" groups with the crap ammo for the most part.

The wind was 5 to 15 MPH, crossing and I had a bag in my rest that was to skinny for the forend, so it was not the best of conditions, but I was not planning on shooting groups.
I cleaned the barrel evey 50 rounds, put about 150 rounds through the barrel, then switched to Dyna point. The groups tightened up even more. I cleaned the barrel again and tried some Automatch. The rifle really liked it. When the wind slowed, I'd hold on the X in the 10 ring and put one right through it. I had groups in the .3" and .4" depending on the wind, it was gusting pretty badly, some much smaller, several with one very small ragged hole for about 3 shots out of 5.
I'm not much good in the wind, but I think this gun will be a shooter when I have it set up right.
I also tried some Wolf MT, groups were not that good, it seamed to prefer higher speed ammo. I was shooting at 50 yards.
I've got about 400 rounds max through it now. I've got a pretty badly messed up back, I have my real good shooting days, my so-so days and bad days, today was a so-so day, that's why I was even more impressed.
Future plans are to have the trigger worked for a pull well under a pound, that will help a lot and to re cut the crown.
I think once it's broken in, the trigger is done and I have my bench set up for the rifle, it's going to be a sweetheart.
I was quite impressed. The cheap ammo looks like a shotgun out of my Savage MKII, but it's ammo sensitive, that is why I was so surprised with the groups. Every group I shot with the Auto Match was in the 10 ring, some not by much, but they scored 10's on every shot the last target of 10 bulls I shot. The more rounds down the tube, the better it shot. I think by 700 or 800 rounds, it should be at it's best.
Thanks for the tips guys. I'll get some targets posted once I get her set up right. I think this is going to be the best $250.00 rifle I've ever bought, NIB even. They are a fantastic rifle for the price. Of course now I'm going to have to save for a nice model 12. I like the US rifles a lot and have a few others.

I love a rife that shoots a veriety of ammo well, the 5200 sure will show you which ammo it likes best in a hurry. I've never had a rifle that would shoot the cheap Remington with a darn, I was very surprised.
I would not use it for a contest target, but for fun plinking on the cheap, I'd now use it anytime.
I'm going to like this rifle a lot :bthumb:

Try Federal Automatch bulk ammo and expect to be surprised. For indoors and 25 yards it works great in my M12. At 50 for practice it is fine. It is the ammo I use when working with youth in my M12. I love the M12 so much like I said that I have two of them. For the money the only rifle that compares might be the Kimbers, but like AJ said they are hit and miss.

I would recommend Federal 510, it's a hi-velocity round. The people I shoot with who own some very high-end .22's use this as a common denominator. We have found some upper end stuff which shoots better in some rifles although the 510 seems to shoot as well or better than 90% of the available ammo in most rimfires. Might be worth a try.

Sounds like you're headed in the right direction:bthumb:

Thanks, it looks like I'll have that taken care of :t I have an Olympic front sight for it already.
Scopes are great, but the peeps offer more of a challange. Shoot very small with the peeps and you have done some good shooting.

Thank You for the tips on the ammo. The Automatch shot very well, I was impressed. It has shot pretty good in some other 22's that I have, usually just a little bigger than a Target ammo, but for the price, it's really hard to beat. The 5200 really seems to like it a lot. I have had some velocity issues with a one lot, I'm going to have to run some over the crono on each lot and see if one is better than the other. I had one lot that had a semi squib about every 15 rounds. The bullet made it out of the barrel every time, but hit low. You could hear a big difference in the sound, but that was just one lot, the others seem fine. The crono will help a lot.
I'm going to get some of the Federal 510 and see how it likes it.
I like the idea of having a target rifle that likes ammo with higher velocity than sub sonic ammo, gives less of a chance for you to move the rifle and with less flight time, less chance for the wind to move it. I'm not great at judging the wind. Working on it, but it really takes some time. I finally made some flags. I always shoot 50 yds.

I still need to put at least another 300 rounds through it to make sure the barrel is pretty well broken in. The JB Bore Shine helps also, good stuff if used without going overboard with it.

The bedding and pillars helped quite a bit, it's shooting much tigher groups after the bedding. I used Brownells Steel Bed, but I use that for all my rifles. It's a little spendy, but two of the large jars will do a lot of bedding and I've had the same stuff going on 5 years and it still works as good today as when I got it.

When done, I have a feeling that I won't be afraid to shoot against any 22 as long as it's not one of the high dollar custom jobs (not that I wouldn't try, who knows). I just have a really good feeling about this rifle. I was really pleased that when the wind died down some, almost every shot took out the X in the 10 ring. That really gives me some hope.
With the trigger lightened, I'm thinking it's going to be a great rifle, and the price sure is right.
I have a Kimber Rusty on the way, hand picked by a friend at Camp Perry. It's just going to be cleaned and put away until I see how high they go for. It's more of an investment, but who knows, I may shoot it also. I've really got hooked on 22's. The gun safe is getting full, almost all are 22RF rifles. You jst can't beat them for fun and low cost.

I'm still working on my consistancy. Seems one day I shoot fantastic, the next just so-so. I do have a sort of excuse, but don't like to make them. What you shoot is what you shoot.

Thanks Guys, John K
